Positano: 48 Hours in the Amalfi Coast Gem

Hey lovelies! Iโ€™m beyond excited to share a slice of paradise with you today! If youโ€™re dreaming of a picturesque getaway drenched in sun, sparkling seas, and indulgent dining, then Positano is your next must-visit destination. Imagine waking up in one of the best hotels in Positano to breathtaking views of the Amalfi Coast, spending your days exploring chic boutiques, and your evenings savoring the most delicious Italian cuisine under the stars. Stick with me, because Iโ€™m about to guide you through my unforgettable journey in Positano, where every corner promises a new adventure and a snapshot worthy of your dreams (and Instagram ;-). I ventured here for the first time last summer and it will not be my last time to visit. Letโ€™s dive into this Italian escapade together!

Getting there Positano, while being one of the most sought after destinations on the Amalfi Coast, can be challenging to get to. Reaching Positano might seem a bit daunting, especially for first-timers, as there isnโ€™t a direct airport serving the town. With no direct flights to Positano, navigating your way can appear lengthy, costly, and somewhat overwhelming, compounded by conflicting advice available online. With a little advanced planning of your itinerary, you can arrive in what I think is the best way – by ferry. Other options are possible such as by hiring a private car and driver, taking a bus, or driving yourself. I highly recommend you leave the driving to those experienced with the unique terrain and cliffside roads. If you’re planning to visit Salerno or Capri before Positano, you can do as I did and take the Positano Jet ferry.

Arrival Your enchanting journey to Positano begins with a scenic Positano Jet ride from Capri, gliding you across the sapphire waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. As you disembark, the picturesque sight of this cliffside village with its steeply-stacked houses painted in sun-washed hues will captivate you.

Day 1: Discovering Positano

Morning – Arrival and Settling In Upon arrival, I strongly recommend employing the services of bag porters; they are invaluable for navigating Positanoโ€™s maze of stairs and narrow lanes. This will allow you to travel comfortably to your accommodation to stay at one of the hotels in Positano without the hassle of lugging your bags down the myriad steps. I recommend booking the Hotel Marincanto or Le Sirenuse for your stay as these are located in idyllic spots with breathtaking views.

Afternoon – Cristoforo Colombo Street for Shopping Once settled, make your way to Cristoforo Colombo Street. This charming avenue is lined with boutiques offering local crafts, bespoke sandals, and chic beachwear. Take your time to explore and perhaps pick up some unique souvenirs or gifts.

Evening – Dinner at Terrazza Celรจ Conclude your day with a delightful dinner at the restaurant Terrazza Celรจ of Hotel Marincanto, one of the most beautiful hotels in Positano. Making dinner reservations when you book your hotel is highly recommended. Nestled on a cliff with panoramic views of the sea, the restaurant offers a perfect blend of exquisite local cuisine and a romantic atmosphere. Their seafood specialties are made with the freshest catch of the day.

Day 2: Leisure and Exploration

Morning – Pool Day at Hotel Marincanto Start your day with a refreshing dip in the infinity pool at Hotel Marincanto. There is a pool bar service so that you can relax poolside, sipping a cocktail (I highly recommend a bright and effervescent limoncello or trying the Amalfi Coast darling, the Aperol Spritz) and soak in the stunning views of the coastline. The view from the pool is the best of any of the hotels in Positano. The beach clubs while being worth a visit won’t give you the cliffside view while sunning.

Afternoon – Visit the church of Santa Maria Assunta In the center of Positano lies one of the most beloved and photographed symbols of the coastal town. Spend your afternoon visiting the iconic church of Positano. This historic site is not only a place of worship but also a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the region. Its majestic architecture and serene ambiance provide a peaceful retreat from the bustling town.

Evening – Sunset Boat Ride As the sun begins to set, embark on a magical boat ride along the coast. Watching the sunset from the water is an unforgettable experience, with the sky and sea bathed in golden hues. This is a perfect moment to capture beautiful photos and enjoy the tranquility of the sea.

Dinner – Chez Black For dinner, head to Chez Black, a renowned beachfront restaurant known for its ambiance and delicious cuisine. Situated on the main beach, it’s a great spot to enjoy traditional dishes like spaghetti alle vongole (spaghetti with clams) under the stars.

Late Evening – Enjoy a bottle of Italian wine and dessert from the patio of your hotel room. If you’ve booked a room at either of the best hotels in Positano (like one of the classic hotels in Positano that I’ve recommended such as Hotel Marincanto or Le Sirenuse) then you’ll be in the perfect spot to end your evening with the moonlight coupled with the soft lights of the light-colored painted buildings illuminating the shimmering ocean. This is one of the most gorgeous scenic views that has to be experienced to truly understand its value.

Practical Tips

  • Stairs and Walking: Positano is famously vertical, with numerous stairs and steep paths. Wearing comfortable walking shoes is a must to enjoy your exploration fully.
  • Bag Porters: Again, do not underestimate the convenience of bag porters to assist with your luggage; they are indeed worth every penny, especially when navigating through Positanoโ€™s labyrinthine steps and alleys.

Departure As your stay comes to an end, take a moment to gaze out at the vast sea one last time, letting the beauty of Positano etch itself into your memories. Whether itโ€™s the incredible food, the breathtaking views, or the charming streets, Positano promises a travel experience filled with beauty and relaxation.
